Throne Toilet Starter Guide

Get Started, Setup is easy!

The Throne is a simple composting toilet. It looks a little different from a water-flush toilet, but don’t worry, it’s easy to use!

Get Started here

Assembly

Your toilet can be used with no additional assembly! Just follow these simple instructions

For best bathroom experience, we recommend anchoring your toilet to the floor and hooking up the ventilation kit.

Placement

Space Requirements

Consider your body’s space requirements: knees, elbows, shoulders, and room to stand up and retrieve your pants. Typically, toilets need a 30” wide area with nothing within 21” in front. Tighter clearances are common in smaller spaces like tiny homes, boats, and RVs.

ADA-compliant bathrooms require larger clearances.

The top of your Throne is the access point for maintenance, requiring no specific clearances to the back, sides, or front. For the vent kit, ensure space for the hose to exit from the back or one side.

Vent Kit

In a well-managed compost toilet, odors may occasionally arise. While not essential, the ventilation fan aids in both odor and moisture control, particularly in less optimized scenarios (e.g., cover material too dry, too large, or insufficient).

The vent’s location is pre-drilled on the back of the Throne. Insert the fan assembly from the inside and secure it with provided hardware. Pass the power cord through the additional hole. Connect the fan to either a 120V AC supply using the plug or hardwire it to a 12V power-supply with a 10 amp fuse for optimal functionality. Ensure the vent exits your structure away from high-traffic areas for effective odor dispersion.

If your layout doesn’t allow for the pre-drilled location, use a 2.5” hole saw to create a new hole to your liking. Insert the fan assembly from the inside, mark and drill screw holes in the four corners of the fan assembly, and secure it with the provided hardware. Drill a hole in the toilet body with a 7/16” bit for the power cord to pass through. It’s not necessary, but we recommend covering the unused pre-drilled hole.

Anchoring

Securing your Throne to the floor is optional but advised, especially in moving vehicles (imagine the clean up!)

Remove the solids bin and liquids jug to access the bottom.

Use included screws in the two raised bossed areas (the eyes of the smiley face) on the bottom of your
Throne to attach to your flooring.

NOTE: these raised boss areas and the provided hardware give the bottom of your Throne a liquid holding capacity of 96oz in the event of a jug overfill.

Use

Solids

For a humanure system, consider adding a layer of cover material at the bottom for easy dumping. For a hassle-free cleanup when disposing of your solids via a conventional waste stream, use a bag.

NOTE: If composting humanure, we highly recommend ‘The Compost Toilet Handbook’ or the ‘Humanure Handbook’ both available in the Throne online shop.

Use and Selection of Cover Material

If using the vent kit, cover material in the solids tank is optional but recommended. Most users prefer covering for aesthetics and to minimize odors. Optimal cover materials include fine-textured carbon-based options like sawdust, coco coir, fine wood shavings, or peat moss.

NOTE: The moisture in cover material acts as a barrier to odors. If toilet contents are fully covered and a smell is still noticeable, moisten the cover material.

Toilet Paper

Toilet paper can be added to the solids bin, but be aware it increases material volume, requiring more frequent emptying. Some users place toilet paper in a separate trash can to avoid unnecessary dumping.

Disposal

For eco-friendly disposal, add solids to a well-managed compost pile. If using a conventional waste stream, adhere to local regulations and double-bag as a courtesy to sanitation workers. Ensure responsible waste management for a cleaner environment.

Liquids

Maintenance

While optional, rinsing the diverter with a spray bottle after use is recommended for a cleaner diverter.

Disposal

For environmentally friendly disposal, add liquids to a well-managed compost pile. Alternatively, use liquids diluted with water as a fertilizer for ornamental plants, or flush down a public toilet.

Liquid Level Alarm

The liquid level alarm activates a red light visible through the diverter when the liquid volume nears the top. Ensure its functionality by checking during each liquids jug emptying. Turn the empty jug upside-down with the lid on and verify the light activates. The level alarm operates on a 9V battery. Regular checks ensure reliable performance (and avoid late night “incidents”)

NOTE: The Liquid Level Alarm will activate with ~50oz remaining before absolute capacity is reached. An average urination is ~8-14 oz so you have ~3-4 uses before the jug spills over after the light is activated.

Troubleshooting

PROBLEMSOLUTION
Odor escaping the toiletCheck the function of the fan if installed. Add more moistened cover material to the solids bin and keep the lid closed. Try to keep liquids out of the solids bin.
Level alarm does not activateCheck the function by turning an empty liquids jug (with the lid on) upside-down. Free the float if it is stuck. Replace the 9v battery if the float moves but the light doesn’t activate.
Hard to clean urine scale depositsAreas where urine repeatedly dries will form uric acid crystals that can be very difficult to remove with normal cleaners. Use a urine-specific enzyme cleaner to remove deposits. Rockin’ Green Dirty Diaper Detergent™ works great and is plant-based, non-toxic, and biodegradable. Drench a stiff-bristled scrub brush with a strong solution (about 1 scoop per pint of warm water), and gently scrub the area to remove urine scale deposits. For very difficult deposits, soak the area with solution for 5-10 minutes, then gently scrub, and repeat as necessary.
